Staging Length, Variation and Utilization—How Do They Affect Crossdocking Performances?

Queueing or congestion effect is an important factor affecting crossdocking performances. In this paper, the author examines features derived from queueing theory and uses simulation methods to analyze staging queueing, a unique queue that pallets would not move forward by themselves. Through the examinations, the author finds that queueing theory still applies to staging queue in general. Further, the author provides several insights for improving crossdocking performance from the simulation results, including smoothing trailer arrivals, installing suitable staging size, balancing demand distribution and avoiding high worker utilization.
