Remote Sensing Archaeology Using Historical Aerial Photographs
Aerial photography played a greater role in discovering archaeological sites. Their origin can be traced back to photographs taken from aerial platforms for military reconnaissance during the World War I. China on the one hand is full of ancient sites, and on the other hand China has accumulated plenty of aerial photos since 1950s. Today with the ever growing urban construction and expansion and ever extensive human activities, the need of historical aerial photographs to discover and locate the lost sites is increasing. This article introduced resources of archaeological objects and aerial photographs of China, and then explained the procedure of applications of aerial photographs in archaeology, and then gave some case studies showing the applications of air photo to archaeological work. Finally the functions of air photo to archaeology were summarized.
