POLLUTION PREVENTION APPLICATIONS IN TURKISH TANNERIES

The study was conducted with the aim of exploring environmentally and economically sound technologies in the leather manufacturing industry. Cleaner Production (CP) assessment methodology was applied to promote and facilitate the adoption of environmental criteria leading towards pollution prevention in the tanning sector. Priority was given to reductions in chemical and water consumption, raw material substitution and emission reductions, with the special emphasis on chromium waste management. Five prioritized CP options were identified for the selected tannery; (a) “chromium recovery through thermal destruction of tanned solid wastes option that converts tanner solid waste into molten ferrochromium through gasification that also produces heat and electricity, (b) “high exhaustion system for chromium management option that increases the chromium uptake from the tanning bath to above 90% while significantly reducing the BOD and COD of the effluent, (c) “protein recovery from fleshings option that saves approximately 77 kg of protein per ton of processed fleshing, (d) “hair recovery from liming and unhairing processes option that saves 30 to 50 kg of dry hair per ton of raw bovine hide processed and (e) “CO2 deliming option that replaces ammonia as a deliming agent reducing ammoniacal nitrogen load of the wastewater effluent by 75%. Payback periods of the above mentioned CP options, identified by the economic feasibility analysis varied between 5 months and 3.5 years. The “chromium recovery through thermal treatment of solid wastes option had the highest capital investment cost of over 1.5 million EUR. The results of the study indicate that implementation of the selected CP options provide reduction in water and raw material consumption and are suitable for promotion and implementation of eco-efficient industrial leather production.
