Properties of cementitious materials incorporating thermoplastic wastes as aggregates
Solid waste management is one of the major environmental concerns in France. Each year over 2.5 million tons of non-biodegradable plastic wastes are generated. In recent years, considerable research has been conducted on the utilisation of waste like fly ash, silica fume, blastfurnace slag, steel slugs and glass aggregates in civil engineering materials. Each of these wastes has provided a specific effect on the properties of fresh and hardened concrete. In this research, polyethylene terephtalate (PET) plastic waste have been used as partial replacement of natural aggregates in mortar. Various volume fractions of sand 3%, 10%, 20% and 50% are substituted by the same volume of plastic, and two different thicknesses of PET aggregates were used. This paper investigates the physico-mechanical properties of the composites. The properties include the dry densities, apparent porosity, gas permeability, compressive and flexural strengths, elastic modulus and toughness indices. The results of the physicomechanical properties are analyzed in comparison with the control specimens. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) is used to study the relationship between gas permeability and composites microstructure. The main results of this study show the feasibility of the beneficial use of PET plastic materials as partial volume substitutes for natural aggregates in cementitious materials. These new composites offer a low-cost, low specific gravity and significant ductility; moreover, the use of plastic waste in concrete to develop new construction materials is valuable for both the construction and the plastic recycling industries.
