ASSESSMENT OF THE RESOURCE POTENTIAL IN WASTE – A CASE STUDY

The aim of this study is to develop a methodology to assess the resource potential of waste streams in Denmark which are currently being landfilled. To achieve this objective, a study has been initiated on shredder residue. This methodology for feasibly recovering resources from shredder residue consists of several operations tools for-Legislative assessment, Technology assessment, Environmental assessment, Economic assessment and assessment of Stakeholders’ concerns. A detailed characterisation study was undertaken to generate reliable data on the overall SR waste stream in Denmark. These operational tools along with the detailed characterisation of the waste assist in identifying the value potential of the shredder residue, the barriers and possibilities of managing this waste stream from a resources perspective. The resources aimed at being extracted from shredder residue include various metals, energy and heat production, non-metallic fractions such as polymers and glass as well as the reuse of ashes. A consequential Life Cycle Assessment study was undertaken to compare different alternative treatment methods including several thermal treatment for shredder residue management. Out of the selected alternatives, torrefaction in combination with gasification was the alternative with significant positive environmental benefits compared to landfilling. This methodology consisting of several operation tools can then be repeated at various other places for shredder residue management and may also be feasible for resources recovery from other waste streams than shredder residue.
