Valorisation of Food and Market Waste by Using Two-Phase Fixed Film Anaerobic Reactor

One of the problem that occurred in acid phase of non homogeneous waste like food and market waste is an accumulation of volatile acid from an easily degradable material containing in these wastes. The purpose of this study is to find out the suitable conditions for acid formation of food waste and market waste. Batch experiments were designed to determine the effect of operation under control pH at neutral and apply dilution water on volatile acid formation. Food waste and market waste and sewage sludge were added to 5-l closed acrylic pipe with the proportion of 70:30 by v/v. For food waste, it found that control pH at neutral (6.5-7.5) can support the hydrolytic-acidogenic stage indicated by a high proportion of SCOD to TCOD of 70.95% and TVA to SCOD of 98.42% obtained from control pH reactor (FR2) compared to 46.3% and 57.78%, respectively for control reactor (FRC). The dilution application is more advantageous in term of increasing the rate of volatile acid production from 246.8 mg HAc/l (before dilution) to 1,785.9 mg HAc/l (after 1st dilution). However, the pH in this system is improper for methanogens function. Operation under two-phase process may be considered; whereas one phase system can be possible in case of control pH together with dilution application. Effect of dilution on acid production in market waste is not clearly seen because of late water addition. However, it was found that control pH at neutral reduces the concentration of undissociated acids, an inhibitory substance of VFA formation.
