SEWAGE SLUDGE GASIFICATION:AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY ON PILOT SCALE
In the present study, tests of dehydrated sewage sludge (20 wt % moisture) gasification were performed with air in a pilot scale fixed bed updraft gasifier. In order to assess the technical feasibility of the process preliminary tests were carried out to evaluate the influence of the air ratio on the product gas quality and gasification efficiency. The experiments were performed with feed rates of 3.28 and 3.67 kg/h and varying the equivalence ratio from 0.28 to 0.48. The results of this preliminary experimentation showed that the sewage sludge can be gasified in a updraft gasifier; the amount of combustible gases was found to be 12.9-17.4 % of the total produced gases in the operating conditions investigated. The optimal condition of the gasifier was found to be 1.08 Nm3/kg of air fuel ratio corresponding to an equivalent ratio of 0.38 which produced a fuel gas with a good calorific value of about 3.7 MJ/Nm3 at a volumetric flow of 4.7 Nm3/h product gas. The cold gas efficiency was 51% at the optimum operating conditions given above. Henceforth, gasification can be considered a suitable solution to recent, and possible future, problems of sewage sludge disposal.
