UPGRADING OF PYROLYTIC-OIL
Biomass /bio-waste is becoming increasingly important as a renewable source of energy and chemicals. Applications as a fuel, or as diesel miscible fuels of bio-oil from the pyrolysis of biomass is not feasible without an upgrading the product. In the study presented here three solid acid catalysts were employed to upgrade bio-oil by esterification with ethanol. The quality the fuel from the catalytically upgraded pyrolysis oil obtained from Miscanthus was significantly improved. The pH of the product was raised to ambient levels, the density of the product decreased to diesel value, the water content decreased by 20-30%, the high heating value (HHV) doubled, and the carbon contents were raised by ca 30%. All of the property changes were positive.
