VALIDATION OF A SIMPLIFIED ADM1 MODEL FOR ANAEROBIC WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANTS
In this work, an ADM1 reduced model previously derived, from the Anaerobic Digestion Model No1 (ADM1), was validated using sound left kernel vectors. Furthermore, the reduced model was applied to search optimal operating protocols; particularly restart-up scenario after short programmed stops was studied. From the computed optimal restarting-up protocol can be concluded that approximately 3-4 days are necessary after a short stop for restart-up the anaerobic reactor. The proposed objective function considers the production of methane and applies a penalty factor according to the time required for the restart-up. Additionally, some constraints were added to the optimization problem taking into account process stability (pH), environmental impact (volatile fatty acids concentration) and some limitations of pumps (large increases of feed flow rate and its maximum flow rate). The results showed that in certain applications a complex model can be reduced to a much simpler one which properly describes the dynamical behaviour of the process.
