VALORISATION OF BRITTANY MARINE DREDGED SEDIMENTS AS MATERIALS OF CONSTRUCTION

Large volumes of sediments are dredged each year in France in order to maintain harbour activities. Due to human industrial activities, an important part of sediments is polluted by different agents: organic pollutants (PAHs, PCBs, TBT and dioxins) and inorganic pollutants (heavy metals such as Pb, Cr, Hg, Zn, and Cu). The disposal of dredged material has become an economical and environmental issue for many countries. Dredged material has to be managed within international rules (OSPAR convention, London convention, Barcelona convention). Their disposal in natural environment is restricted. Thus, research on environmentally solutions using these materials is encouraged. This work investigates a new alternative and beneficial use of Brittany marine dredged sediments as a new material for cement production. Two different sites from the northern coast of Brittany (France) have been chosen for this study. Firstly, the sediments are characterized using several techniques. The physical properties like water content, granulometry and density are identified. The mineralogy of the sediments is studied using X-ray diffraction. Their chemical analyses are done in order to quantify their composition in oxides, heavy metals, PCBs, and PAHs. The results show that the sediments have high water content, important fine particles, and the main minerals observed are calcite, quartz, kaolinite, illite, and muscovite. Secondly, four mortars in which given cement content is replaced by the same mass content of treated sediment (0%, 8%, 16% and 33%) are designed. Prismatic samples (4 cm x 4 cm x 16 cm) are prepared and tested under compressive loading at 7 and 28 days. The results show that the sediment without heating or without chemical treatment can be used successfully in cement production.
