THE EFFECTS OF TRACE ELEMENT DOPING ON THE OPTICAL PROPERTIES AND PHOTOCATALYTIC ACTIVITY OF TITANIUM DIOXIDE

The influence of the increasing zirconium content (0.1-0.97 mol%) with the constant amount of other additives (P, K, Al or P, K) on the anatase-rutile phase transformation (ART), optical properties and photostability of doped rutile has been investigated. The starting material was the concentrated suspension of technical-grade hydrated titanium dioxide (HTD). The dopant agents (calculated to P2O5, K2O, Al2O3, ZrO2,) solutions were introduced to HTD. Prepared samples were calcined with gradually increasing process temperature. The X-ray diffraction analysis was used to determine the anatase and rutile content in the TiO2 samples. Optical properties have been determined by measuring the colour in a grey and white system. Photostability was characterized by the white lead-glycerin test with UV-Vis light. The influence of the increasing zirconium content on the anatase to rutile phase transformation was not observed. The addition of aluminium to modifiers composition resulted in the decrease of the final calcination temperature. It was found that rutile doped with phosphates, potassium, aluminium and zirconium in the comparison with rutile doped with phosphates, potassium and zirconium had higher brightness and reflectance spectra but lower value of white tone and significantly lower value of grey tone. Rutile doped with modifiers containing aluminium had higher photostability than that without this additive. The significant influence of the increase of zirconium content in the composition with P, K and Al or P and K on the photostability of doped rutile was not observed.
