FUTURE PERSPECTIVE FOR BIO-ENERGY PRODUCTION IN THE PROVINCE OF TURIN
Treatment of solid waste continues to be on the political agenda. Waste disposal issues are often viewed from an environmental perspective, but economic and social aspects also need to be considered when deciding on waste strategies and policy instruments. The present work investigates the waste management in the Province of Turin and discuss different policy instruments taking into account the biogas potentially obtained from Municipal Solid Waste (MSW), separated waste collection, livestock effluents and energy crops. MSW from large landfill of Turin can produce 98.2 kWhe/t (3.85% of domestic demand of the whole province). As far as the source separate collection is concerned, a substantial decrease in the production of biogas in landfills was observed. On the other hand, the organic fraction may be sent to anaerobic digestion to produce energy. Finally, waste from livestock and agricultural products can make a significant contribution to energy recovery (even more than 5% of domestic demand).
