OPTIMISATION OF THE PROCESSES OCCURING IN AEROBIC LANDFILL – SIMULATION IN LYSIMETERS

Aeration of landfills accelerates decomposition of organic matter present in waste when compared to the rate of processes carried out under anaerobic conditions. The aim of this work was aerobic landfill simulation in lysimeters for different amounts of recirculated leachate. In the examined range of leachate recirculation from 0.007 to 0.25 dm3/d×kg of dry mass it was found that the increase in reduction of organic loading indices in leachate occurred with the increase of leachate recirculation rate. Reduction of leachate indices in lysimeter, in which the greatest amount of leachate was recirculated, was equal as follows: BOD5 99.96%, COD 96%, N-NH4+95.4% and TOC 95.2%. In lysimeter, where the smallest amount of leachate was recirculated, BOD5 was reduced by 97.3%, COD by 83.0%, N-NH4+by 26% and TOC by 79.8%. Reduction of indices in a non-aerated lysimeter was equal as follows: BOD5 99.6%; COD 85.5 %; N-NH4+85.4% and TOC 94.7 %. In anaerobic lysimeter during first 34 days of the process double increase of the value of BOD5 index was observed, whereas on subsequent days of the process the value of this index decreased. Similar changes were observed during the first 50 days in the case of aerated lysimeter in which the smallest amount of leachate was recirculated. The analysis of BOD5 changes in time for remaining lysimeters showed high reduction of the index in the course of the first 80 days of aeration. In aerated lysimeters no considerable influence of leachate recirculation on the quantity of formed carbon dioxide was noticed. However, the smaller rate of leachate recirculation, the greater quantity of oxygen was assimilated.
