THERMAL TREATMENT OF INDUSTRIAL AND MUNICIPAL WASTES USING PYROMETALLURGICAL SYSTEMS

The processing conditions achieved in pyrometallurgical reactors make them suitable for treating of various types of inorganic as well as organic wastes. Characterization of different wastes has shown that almost all wastes could be converted into to four major fractions: -the slag fraction consists of stable oxides such as CaO, SiO2, Al2O3 and MgO, -the metal fraction consists of metals from reduction of less stable oxides as Fe-oxide and Ni-oxide, -the fume fraction consists of easily evaporated elements like zinc, lead, halogens and alkalis, -the energy fraction enriched in CO and H2 gas from the organic part of the waste. The thermo-characteristics of the available recycling technologies and practices as well as the potential pyrometallurgical solutions for efficient conversion of wastes to the four products mentioned above will be reviewed and analyzed. Two examples based on experiences from some of the pilot and demonstration projects carried out at Swerea MEFOS in the past decades and industrialized processes using various kinds of pyrometallurgical reactors for development of energy-efficient and environmental friendly technologies will be highlighted. One is the IPBM-process for metallurgical recovery of metals and oxide valuables from metallurgical wastes such as slag, sludge and dust. The other one is using metallurgical principle for hydrogen production.
