CONSTRUCTION WASTES FROM THE TEMPORARY RESIDENTIAL AREA OF TSUNAMI SURVIVORS: A CASE OF PRU TIOW VILLAGE, PHANG NGA PROVINCE, THAILAND

Phang Nga province in Thailand was the one area severely affected by Tsunami occurring on 26th December 2004. After Tsunami, a lot of people suddenly become homeless. As a consequence, massive evacuation and relocation of people to new settlement areas had to follow. However, before trans-locating people to the permanent houses, the temporary houses were constructed for the tsunami’s victim. After moving to the new permanent residential area, as a result; construction wastes from the temporary houses become an emerging problem since there is no organized or structured this wastes management system that could cope with the sudden wastes amount in the area. This paper reported the investigated results of the construction wastes from the temporary houses of the Tsunami survivors at Pru Tiow village, Bang Nai Si sub-district, Phang Nga province, Thailand. Deconstruction was used to calculate the amount of by products from the temporary building. It was determined that these building residues could be as high as 2,200 tonnes. The highest amount of the building residues is cement floor. However, there was the potential to recycle many components of construction byproduct/wastes. Wood wastes can also be recovered and recycled. However, the fact, these materials of the temporary building of the Tsunami survivors at Pru Tiow village were not be managed by the government or local authorities. In case, the government or local authorities concerns these construction materials as a recyclable materials and responds for this materials management, it could estimate to turn as the monetary value of 0.8 million Baht. This was calculated from recycling of wood and cement roof only. It recommends the government or local authorities to manage these construction materials, before they will turn to be a real waste and could not be used.
