PHYSICO-CHEMICAL TREATMENT OF ASBESTOS CONTAINING MATERIALS
Our objective was the transformation of asbestos containing materials by thermal treatment. Additives such as borates, phosphates and sodium carbonate were introduced to lower the fusion temperatures and the treatment costs. Thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry were used to estimate melting effects due to the additives. Characterization of asbestos containing wastes by spectroscopic methods could speed the process of controlling the absence of fibers in the final treated product. Besides scanning electron microscopy, microprobe analysis, infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction, samples were examined by electron paramagnetic resonance. Results demonstrate that asbestos fibers with anisotropic spectra are changed to isotropic spectra after fusion. Thus heating with fusion additives allows irreversible destruction of the asbestos fibrous structure and recycling of the residues as inert filling materials in mortars.
