LIFE CYCLE ASSESSMENT OF SEWAGE SLUDGE INCINERATION:ENVIRONMENTAL AND ECONOMIC ANALYSIS
To minimize the environmental and economic impacts of sludge incineration processes, and to provide a scientific proof for determining the level of confidence in the assertion, life cycle assessment and life cycle cost of sewage sludge incineration process were carried out in this study through estimating the environmental and economic impact of alternative scenarios for treating sewage sludge including: incineration at normal or high temperature; machine or gravity thickening; with or without digestion. Uncertainty analysis was accomplished based on Taylor series expansion for lognormal distribution. For all scenarios, 1) the impact of the climate change and human toxicity categories had an important contribution; whereby, the impact of particulate matter formation, terrestrial acidification, and fossil depletion, and nonrenewable energy played relatively small roles; 2) the direct CO2 and N2O emissions dominated the climate change potential impact; 3) the substances that contributing the most to the human toxicity score were mercury and cadmium/arsenic to air. Low environmental and economic impacts were obtained by implementing digestion process due to the reduced amount of dry matters. For decreasing global warming gas emissions, increasing the temperature of incineration process is recommended. For minimizing human toxicity, controlling the arsenic and mercury emissions resulted from incineration industry is urgently required. In this study, gravity thickening followed by digestion and then incineration at high temperature proved to be the optimum environmental and economical pathway.
