UTILIZATION OF JAVA KAPOK (CEIBA PENTANDRA) BY OIL TRANSESTERIFICATION TO PRODUCE BIODIESEL
Java kapok (ceiba pentandra) oil can be obtained from the kapok seeds by extraction. The java kapok oil can be reacted with methanol to produce methyl ester to use as biodiesel by transesterification process. The java kapok oil has a high free fatty acid (FFA) content and to be reduced to less than 1% by pretreatment process with methanol using an acid catalyst. Transesterification with methanol was undertaken with several variables. Reaction time was chosen for 90 minutes. The pretreatment process has found that FFA content was reduced to 0.05%. Meanwhile the triglycerides conversion attained up to 99.30%. The methyl ester product had properties similar to those diesel oil. This feedstock employed was cheaper and consist of side product without any other use, thus increasing the environmental benefit and reducing dependency of conventional materials.
