Characterization of sewage sludge ash and technical and environmental evaluation for potential utilization as secondary raw materials in construction
The sewage sludge ash is used as a secondary raw material in construction. To evaluate the feasibility, some characterizations (physical, composition and behavior) of ashes were first investigated following the standard methods of France. Then some test pieces with different percentages of substitution of cement were fabricated and technical and environmental tests were done to find out an appropriate recipe of partial substitution. The results of the experiments for the ash characterization indicated that the behavior of the sewage sludge ash could be considered intermediary between cement and sand, because of the higher particle size and higher SiO2 content than cement. In regarding the environmental behavior, most of the elements in the ash have no harmful impact to the environment, except the Mo and Se, which leaching concentrations almost or even get to the threshold “not dangerous and “acceptability for Construction, and pretreatment should be considered for decreasing the leaching of these two elements to “inert. But for the cube test piece of concrete with the ash, the total leaching concentrations of elements are very close to the blank sample and very low comparing to the limit value. The experiments performed with sewage sludge ash in partial replacement of cement showed a small decrease in compression strength of concrete.
