SOLID WASTE AND ECOLOGICAL ISSUES OF COAL TO ENERGY

Coal to energy, one of the dirty forms of energy, will be the major energy source for foreseeable future. The waste generated from coal to energy and the ecological degradation during mining and processing of coal are two issues that are not given much attention. The first issue is the utilization rate of coal fly ash. Fly ash, a combustion waste of coal to energy, is an industrial by-product which is recognized as an environmental pollutant. Because of mineral chemistry fly ash exhibits pozzolanic and sometimes cementitious behavior. It is, therefore, an important additive in cement and can also be used to stabilize loose soils for geotechnical engineering. Hence coal fly ash is of economic value, though it is treated as a waste. The utilization rate of coal fly ash is not high when compared with the fly ash generation rate. Hence vast quantities of fly ash generated each year are held in ponds, which have cause unproductive use of land and the associated long-term financial burden of maintenance. The reasons preventing full utilization of coal fly ash and ways to accomplish 100% utilization are briefly reviewed in this paper. Since vast quantities of coal fly ash are stored for later reuse or disposal, the issues involved in the storage are also discussed. The second issue that is neglected in current discussion is the ecological degradation of land during coal mining and processing. The ecological degradation during mining and processing of coal includes water contamination, generation of coal mining waste and land subsidence. The methods to prevent ecological degradation during mining and processing of coal are also discussed in this paper. This paper tries to provide a quantifiable overview of the solid waste and ecological issues of coal to energy process and way to make the dirty process greener.
