CORRELATION BETWEEN WASTE SETTLEMENT AND BIODEGRADATION: MODELLING AND VALIDATION ON LABORATORY BIOREACTORS PILOTS
Purpose: Settlement of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) in landfills is a key geotechnical concern since it could lead to dramatic failure of cap cover systems. The biodegradation enhancement associated to the anaerobic bioreactor landfill technology provides a significant acceleration of settlement. In order to model accurately MSW secondary settlement in such conditions, an original model is proposed. It includes both a classical time-dependent mechanical contribution and a biodegradation contribution. The effect of biodegradation on settlement kinetics is evaluated from the biogas production. Methods: Based on the typical MSW composition in France, lab-scale simulated bioreactor landfill pilots were monitored during 450 days. A coherent set of data including leachate balance and quality, biogas production and settlement was obtained. This experiment was designed in order to compare various leachate injection strategies and the effect of MSW pre-treatment (two sizes of shredded MSW:<150 mm and<70 mm). In this communication, the results obtained with the two types of MSW for a same leachate injection protocol are analyzed using the settlement model. Results & main conclusions: A satisfactory agreement between model and experiment is evidenced. It puts forward a very high contribution of biodegradation on settlement in bioreactor operating conditions. The relative weights of both settlement mechanisms are coherent with the known material granulometry.
