THE ELECTRICAL RESISTIVITY TOMOGRAPHY FOR COLUMN BIOREACTOR

As an important tool, bioreactor is often used to physically simulate and observe the biodegradation processes occurred in the land filled waste. Because sampling waste is not only intrusive, but also limited both in time and in space, a technology that can be used to image the interior of the bioreactor and monitor the biodegradation processes in it is vitally necessary. By installing 64 lead electrodes on the surface of column-like bioreactor, measurement methods with the traditional electrical prospecting equipment and electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) technology for visualizing the interior of bioreactor that has an irregular geometry were investigated in this study. With the synthetic data the ERT was conducted to verify the obtained resistivity images. The forward calculation is based on a finite element method with tetrahedron as its element. Therefore, the ERT has enough capability to adapt the calculation range to almost any finite object with irregular geometry. The inversion algorithm used is patching method proposed by Zhou et al. in 1999. The results show that even with the traditional electrical prospecting equipment it is still possible to visualize the internal two-dimensional resistivity structure of the bioreactor and monitor its variations in the biodegradation processes of the land filled waste. The proposed measurement method and ERT are practical and effective. Thus obtained resistivity images of the bioreactor reasonably reflected the stages and spatial differences in the biodegradation processes.
