DE-SODIUM FROM EXTRACTED VANADIUM TAILINGS USING HYDROTHERMAL TREATMENT
Vanadium can be effectively extracted from vanadium slag using sodium salts/hydroxide as reaction media. During the vanadium extraction processes, due to the formation of water insoluble sodium containing substances, significant amount of sodium is lost in the tailings. And the tailings can not be used as the construction material for its high sodium content. A strategy of de-sodium from the tailings was proposed in this study by investigating the phases of sodium containing substances in the extracted vanadium tailings. The sodium may exist mainly as Na2O·Al2O3·1.7SiO2, and can be replaced by calcium due to the formation of thermodynamically more stable 3CaO·Al2O3·xSiO2·(6-2x)H2O. Our preliminary experimental results show that by adding lime into vanadium tailings during hydrothermal treatment, the mass fraction of Na2O in tailings could be lowered from 6-10% to 1%, and the dissolved alkali can be recovered in the form of sodium hydroxide. Thus, the final tailings can be used as construction materials.
