Partition behavior of phenol and o-nitrophenol in three-phase system

Partition behavior of phenol and o-nitrophenol in three-phase systems composed of organic solvent, polymers, salt and water were studied. Organic-aqueous system and aqueous two-phase system were also used for comparison. Results show that organic-aqueous system and aqueous two-phase system are not effective for the separation of the two phenolic compounds, while three-phase system can provide a satisfying separation results. Solution pH, organic solvent, phase-forming polymers and their concentration are main factors that affect the partitioning behavior of the two phenolic compounds. At pH=9.40, in the three-phase system containing n-octanol-PEG2000-(NH4)2SO4, the mass fractions of phenol in the top phase and o-nitrophenol in the middle phase can reach 75% and 80%, respectively. The multi-component wastewater was purified and the two phenolic compounds were recovered as well.
