CONVERSION OF PROTEN- AND FAT-CONTAINING WET BIOMASS WITH HOT COMPRESSED WATER

Tofu waste, a typical wet biomass containing both fat and protein compositions besides cellulose, is discharged after tofu production. The hydrothermal is preferred to be a low-energy mothod for such kind of high water content (over 90 wt%) biomass. In this report, the tofu waste was treated by hot compressed water at low-temperature (200~390 ℃) in a 10 ml stainless batch reactor, without addition of catalyst. Four kinds of prodcts including gases, water-solubles, water-insolubles and oils could be obtained after hydrothermal reactions, dpending on the temperature. The results showed that water temperature caused the most significant influence on the product allocation: below 250 ℃, gaseous product, water-soluble product, and water-insoluble product were yielded; and a oily matter separating completely from water get appeared above 250 ℃; the water-insolubles disappeared completely around 300 ℃; and and the oil fraction began to drop from yield of 30% when the temperature over 350 ℃. With the increase of temperature gas yield increased, the major gaseous product of hydrothermal treatment is CO2 with certain amount of CO, from 250 ℃ CO decreased and disappeared around to 300 ℃, H2 and trace of CH4 can be detected and increased when temperature over 300 ℃. The convesion of TW in HCW was understtod by a four-stage mechanism. The chemical analysis of the oily products indicates the hot compressed water has the functions of hydrogenation and deoxidation to the oily products.
