Study on characteristics of palygorskite in purification of petroleum contaminated groundwater

The natural palygorskite modified was as reactive media of PRB. Based on the investigation of effect of specific hydrochemical factors, such as Fe2+, Fe3+, Mn2+, NO3-, SO42- etc., on remediation efficiency of petroleum contaminated groundwater, the dynamics, isothermal adsorption model and characterization of reactive media were studied. The results showed that the effect of purifying TPH with the palygorskite modified was best when concentration of Fe2+, Mn2+ and SO42-were 0-30, 0-10 and 0-50 mg/L, respectively. The purification process of TPH was achieved quickly and the removal rate was 92.82% in 30 minutes. The absorption kinetics was followed pseudo-second order kinetics. The adsorption process fitted the Langmuir isothermal models. The apparent maximum adsorption capacity was 2.5g/g. The characteristics of palygorskite modified were acicular or fibrous, some other crystals gathering in it, more pores, very large specific surface area;it had the advantage to remove TPH from petroleum contaminated groundwater by absorption method.
