Study on Nitrate-N Removal by a Catalytic Electrolysis Method in Water

A new method for Nitrate-N removal in water has been presented in this paper, and related experiments have been carried out to study its technical characteristics. Results showed that in designed electrolysis system, Fe modified Ti substrate cathode can catalytic reduce NO3--N to NH4+-N under suitable conditions. Furthermore NH/-N can be oxidized to N2-N in same system by supporting of CI~. Under the conditions of Cr addition quantity of 500mg/L, current density of 12 mA/cm2, plate distance of 9mm, stirring intensity of 450rpm, and electrolysis time of 150min, about 94.3% NO3--N and 94.1% TN can be removed, even no NO2--N or NH/-N is produced. Moreover mechanism has been analyzed based on bimetal catalytic reduction and obtained results. The adsorption effect of Fe to O and reductant attacking may be considered as the major cause of NO3--N reduction. And chlorine oxidation may be the reason of NH4+-N harmlessly removing
