The Effects of Rain Pulse on Soil Respiration
The paper introduces a simple method to measure the transient respiration responses of forest soil to rain pulses under laboratory conditions. The measurement system is composed of a sprinkler, closed static chamber Li-6400 portable photosynthesis system (Li-COR Inc.,Lincoln,Nebraska,USA) and the connecting conduits. We collected soil samples In the floor of broad-leaved/Korean pine forest in Changbai Mountain and measured soil respiration rate with this system. The transient respiration responses of the soil samples with different soil water contents to three rainfall treatments were tested The results showed that there were a rapid increase of soil respiration and a subsequent decline after reaching a maximum following rain pulse. Soil respiration rates after rain pulses were 2-6 times higher than that before the rain event. Errors of soil respiration rates caused by the measurement system were also discussed.
