SYNTHESIS AND CHARACTERIZATION OF QUATERNIZED CARBOXYMETHYL CHITOSAN UNDER MICROWAVE IRRADIATION IN AQUEOUS SOLUTION
The present study was to prepare quaternized carboxymethyl chitosan (QCMC) rapidly using an innovative approach under microwave irradiation in aqueous solution without isopropyl alcohol. The QCMC structure was characterized by means of FT-IR, XRD, 1H-NMR and 13C-NMR spectroscopy. Its thermal stability was measured by TGA, and gel permeation chromatography-laser light scattering (GPC-LLS) analyzed its weight-average molecular weight (Mw). Structure characterizations and surface analysis proved that QCMC was successfully synthesized. The max degree of substitution (DS) of carboxymethyl group and quaternary ammonium group under the optimum reaction conditions was 0.82 and 0.48, respectively. This study revealed that the microwave irradiation method without organic solvent is a rapid and environment-friendly process to obtain chitosan derivative.
