MEDICINE-GRADE MICROCRYSTALLINE CELLULOSE PRODUCT FROM COTTON LINTER–THE NEW PRODUCTION TECHNOLOGIES

Cotton linter ethanol pulping trials and TCF bleaching were carried out, and the feasibility of producing medicine-grade microcrystalline cellulose from cotton linter was discussed as well. The operation conditions, such as the acetic acid dosages, solid-liquor ratio and the cooking time at the maximum temperature during the pulping were investigated. The experimental results indicated that KMnO4 number of pulps was influenced significantly by solid-liquor ratio and cooking time. The optimal cooking conditions could be proposed as follows: acetic acid dose 1.0%, solid liquor ratio 1:8, cooking time 60 min, which provides pulp with KMnO4 numbers 8.7 and yield 81.9%. A pulp of KMnO4 numbers 3.3, α-cellulose content 92.5% and brightness 86.6%ISO can be obtained by EAPP bleaching. What’s more, Microcrystalline Cellulose was obtained through optimal acid hydrolysis process from cotton linter ethanol pulp and was detected by XRD, SEM and laser granularity distributing apparatus. The result shows that: the product has a good quality, and can meet the requirements of the standards of medicine-grade microcrystalline cellulose that listed in Chinese pharmacopoeia 2005 and USP24.
