STUDY ON THE ANTIBACTERIAL PROPERTY OF ELAEAGNUS ANGUSTIFOLIA L.

Elaeagnus angustifolia L., which is a species in Elaeagnaceae family and has long been used as a remedy for various diseases, was screened for its antibacterial property. In this investigation, the 95% aqueous EtOH extracts from E. angustifolia stem barks were successively partitioned with several solvents to yield fractions soluble in n-hexane, CH2Cl2, EtOAc, n-BuOH and H2O. Results, expressed by diameter of inhibition zone, indicated that the 95% EtOH extracts and the resulted n-hexane, EtOAc, n-BuOH and H2O soluble fractions revealed antibacterial activity of different degrees against the 4 Gram bacteria, including both Gram-positive bacteria species, Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis, and Gram-negative ones, Escherichia coli and Salmonella enteric. However, CH2Cl2 soluble fraction didn’t exhibit antibacterial effect against the selected microorganisms.
