QUANTITIVE DETERMINATION OF THE DISTRIBUTION OF P-COUMARIC,FERULIC ACID AND THEIR DIMERS IN SUGARCANE BAGASSE
The distribution in plant cell wall of p-coumaric (p-CA) and ferulic acid (FA) and their dimers were studied in various fractions obtained from sugarcane bagasse. Saponification at room temperature was used to release cinnamic acids from five fractions of sugarcane bagasse. The released p-CA, FA as well as their dimers were characterized by GC-MS. As a result, the predominant monomers were p-CA and FA. The content of p-CA in ball-milled sugarcane bagasse was 3.8%. However, FA was only 0.36%. Analysis of p-CA and FA in all these fractions supported findings reported previously that most of p-CA is esterified into lignin and FA is esterified to carbohydrates. Most FA derived dimers detected by GC-MS were crosscoupled dimmer CA-(β-O-4)-FA and 8-8, 8-5, 5-5 coupled FA dimers. A small amount of (FA)-(β-O-4)- Sinapyl alcohol and p-CA-(8-8)-p-CA may also exist in all five fractions.
