SYNTHESIS AND CHARACTERIZATION OF HEMICELLULOSIC DERIVATIVES WITH NOVEL BIFUNCTIONAL GROUPS IN BUTANOL MEDIUM

Novel Hemicellulosic derivatives with bifunctional groups were synthesized by the etherification using acrylamide as reactant and sodium hydroxide as catalyst in a butanol/water system. The factors such as the volume ratio of butanol to water, the molar ratio of catalyst to xylose unit in hemicelluloses, and the molar ratio of acrylamide to xylose unit in hemicelluloses were investigated in detail. It was found that the total degree of substituent (DS) of the derivatives increased with the increment of the molar ratio of acrylamide to xylose unit in hemicelluloses, and the DS of carbamoylethyl groups increased with the increasing of the total DS values of the products. The novel hemicellulosic derivatives containing carbamoylethyl and carboxyethyl groups could be confirmed by FT-IR, 1H-NMR and 13C-NMR spectroscopies. The thermal behavior of hemicellulosic derivatives was determined by thermogravimetry (TG) and differential thermal analysis (DTA). The results indicated that the thermal stability of the novel hemicellulosic derivatives was lower than native hemicelluloses. This work provided a facile method for the synthesis of hemicelluloses derivatives with bifunctional groups and higher DS of 0.92.
