INFLUENCE OF TEMPO-MEDIATED OXIDATION ON DIFFERENT FIBER FRACTIONS OF TMP

The fiber fractions - R14, R28, R48, R100, R200, were selectively oxidized by TEMPO-mediated system respectively in this paper. The chemical components of oxidized fiber fractions, including extractives, lignin and holocellulose contents, were similar although they decreased remarkably compared with the untreated ones. Similar trend was also found that the carboxyl contents of oxidized fiber fractions were around 380 mmol/kg, which was only 50 mmol/kg for untreated ones. However, the fiber length and curl index of the oxidized long fibers, analyzed by FQA, decreased sharply, especially for R14 and R28, leading to a higher increase in tensile and burst strength compared with R100 and R200. The decrease of intrinsic fiber strength of long fibers was lower than that of short fibers, resulting in the drop of tear strength for all the fractions. However, the TEMPO-mediated oxidation on long fibers should be a novel way for TMP enhancement.
