PHYSICOCHEMICAL CHARACTERIZATION OF LIGNIN ISOLATED WITH DMSO/LiCl FROM DAHURIAN LARCH

The physicochemical properties and structural features of six lignin preparations isolated with dimethyl sulfoxide and lithium chloride (DMSO/LiCl), followed by extraction with ethanol/water from ball milled dahurian larch were investigated. The isolated lignin fractions were characterized using sugar analysis, FT-IR and 1H, 13C and 2D HSQC NMR spectroscopy techniques. The results showed that lignin preparations were relatively free of associated polysaccharides. Guaiacyl lignin type occupied the predominant components in these lignin fractions and fewer amounts of p-hydroxyphenyl units were also detected. Further studies by 13C and 2D HSQC NMR spectra showed that the lignin preparations consisted mainly of β-O-4 ether bonds combined with small quantities of β-β and β-5 carbon-carbon linkages. Furthermore, trace amount of cinnamyl alcohol end-groups was also detected in these lignin fractions.
