PYROLYSIS AND SOLVOLYSIS OF OIL PALM EMPTY FRUIT BUNCH (EFB) AND EFB LIGNIN WITH AND WITHOUT CATALYST

Hematite nanoparticles have been successfully synthesised in situ onto palm oil fibre surfaces. SEM showed that hematite nanoparticle sizes were in the range of 30-80 nm and were distributed evenly on the surface of the fibre. The solvolysis liquefaction of EFB fibre and EFB-soda lignin with and with out catalyst was carried out under atmospheric pressure of N2 gas, at a reaction temperature of 250oC, over 60 min in the presence of ethylene glycol. For structure determination, pyrolysis-GC-MS of the EFB and EFB lignin (soda and kraft) was carried out. The conversion and yield of EFB liquefaction increased significantly in the presence of the hematite catalyst. The pyrolysis of both lignin and EFB fibres consisted of a high proportion of aromatics unit with phenol being the most prominent one.
