STUDY OF THE EFFICIENCY OF LACCASE/NATURAL MEDIATORS SYSTEM IN MODIFYING OF OCC PULP

Since the need to improve industry’s sustainability scientists put more attention to natural mediators nowadays. Some lignin derived phenols represent an alternative to synthetic mediators. Two natural mediators were compared in terms of efficiency in laccase-assisted modification of OCC (Old Corrugated Container) pulp. Scanning electron microscope (SEM), gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and FTIR spectrum (IR) testing measures were used to study the surface feature of fibers, morphological properties of fibers and physical properties of OCC pulp after laccase/mediator system treatment. The SEM images of laccase treated fibers and laccase /natural mediator system treated fibers showed: The surface of laccase treated fibers appeared rough and vertically packed micro fibers in OCC fiber surface were observed; after laccase /natural mediator system treatment, the surfaces of OCC fibers appeared smooth and a surface adhesion between fibers was observed. We use IR and GPC to speculate the mechanism of laccase natural mediators system and modify OCC pulp and how natural mediators change during laccase treatment. GPC test suggested that the molecular weight of natural mediators increased during the treatment, which indicated that natural mediators polymerized. We concluded that wet strength of OCC improved after laccase natural /mediator system treatment, especially the wet ring crush strength increased dramatically.
