ELECTROCHEMICAL DELIGNIFICATION CATALYZED BY PMO7V5 AND FOLLOWING EQP BLEACHING OF POPLAR KRAFT PULP
The prepared polyoxometalate (POM), Na8PMo7V5O40-PMO7V5, as a mediator, was applied in the electrochemically mediated delignification (EM) of poplar kraft pulp. The delignification efficiency of this POM-mediated system and the following bleachability of delignified pulp using EQP were studied and discussed in this paper. The results showed that PMO7V5 was a suitable mediator for the electrochemical delignification of poplar kraft pulp. Under the optimum conditions, the Kappa number was reduced from 17.3 to 11.4 and viscosity was decreased from 1018cm3/g to 898 cm3/g. The alkali treatment after EM could further reduce Kappa number and increase the brightness of the electrochemical-PMO7V5 delignified pulp. The Kappa number of pulp treated with EME could be reduced to 8.5 with 924 cm3/g viscosity. For the pulp with 15.2 initial Kappa number, the EMEQP bleaching can bleach the pulp to 80.9 % ISO brightness at 3.0% H2O2 dosage with 824 cm3/g of final viscosity.
