ELECTROCHEMICAL DELIGNIFICATION MEDIATED WITH VIOLURIC ACID AND SUBSEQUENT ECF BLEACHABILITY OF DELIGNIFIED POPLAR KRAFT PULP
The electrochemically mediated delignification (EM) is one of the new methods for pulp delignification and bleaching. In this paper, the electrochemical delignification mediated with violuric acid (VIO) of the kraft pulps with different Kappa numbers was carried out. The subsequent bleachability of EM delignified pulps was studied using alkali extraction and chlorite dioxide bleaching. The ECF bleaching sequence containing EM stage was developed. The results showed that VIO was a suitable mediator for the electrochemical delignification of poplar kraft pulp. And this VIO-mediated delignification system had a good delignification ratio for different Kappa number pulps. The alkali treatment after EM could further reduce Kappa number and increase brightness of electrochemical-VIO delignified pulp. With the following EpD bleaching, the EM delignified pulp could be bleached to 80% ISO at 1.0% ClO2 with 849 cm3/g viscosity, or about 85% ISO at 1.5% ClO2 with 752 cm3/g viscosity. With the following EpD1D2 bleaching, the resulting brightness could reach 87.6% ISO with 746 cm3/g viscosity at 1.5% and 1.0% ClO2 respectively in D1 and D2 stage.
