STRENGTH IMPROVEMENT OF POPLAR APMP BY XYLANASE
The poplar APMP was treated by xylanase and then was refined by a PFI. The properties of pulp were determined. The treated pulp fibers were analyzed by fiber quality analyzer (FQA), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results showed that xylanase treatment could improve the tensile strength and tear strength of paper. The total carboxyl group, water retention value and the crystal index increased. The fine content and kink index of pulp significantly decreased. The length and coarseness of fibers increased. The granules lignin on fiber surface reduced and the abundant of micro-fibril structure were exposed. The surface lignin decreased. The hydroxyl group and the carboxyl increased. It was suggested that the removal of fines, the hydrolysis of hemicelluloses in fibers and the decrease of surface lignin contributed to the improvement of paper strength.
