LATEST DEVELOPMENTS AND TRENDS IN CHEMICAL MECHANICAL PULPING OF HARDWOODS
Commercial installations of hardwood chemical mechanical pulp plants have been increasing for the last 10 years, and the trend will likely continue in the foreseeable future. This paper reviews common pulping technologies involved in those installations, but focuses mainly on the latest technology, P-RC APMP process, as it has become more and more popular in the industry. This technology has undergone also significant development since it was first introduced in 1999. Although the fundamental concept remains the same, there are now several different process design options that have been developed under P-RC APMP basic concept in recent years. These options, together with their applications in different industrial situations will be presented and discussed in this paper. In addition to pulping technology development, several general trends in hardwood chemical mechanical pulping industry will also be discussed in this paper.
