AUTOHYDROLYSIS PRETREATMENT OF MIXED SOUTHERN HARDWOOD ON ALKALINE PULPING AND PULP BLEACHABILITY

In this study, Mixed Southern Hardwood was pretreated by autohydrolysis at 160°C for 1h. Alkaline pulping was done with both the pretreated and original chips, and the target Kappa was 17 and 30. Oxygen delignification was carried out on the kappa 30 pulps to reach kappa 17. After pulping, the different pulps of similar Kappa were bleached by D0(EP)D1 sequence. Pulping results show that the pretreated chips are easier to cook and needs lower alkaline charge to achieve a similar Kappa without decreasing pulp viscosity. Under the same bleaching conditions, autohydrolysis leads to pulps with higher brightness and viscosity, and the paper sheets have higher opacity, scattering coefficient and tear index, with lower burst and tensile index. After autohydrolysis, the fiber length, fiber width and percentage of fines decrease, the coarseness, curl index and kink index increase. Yet, the paper properties of bleached pulps are not significantly improved by MCC pulping or oxygen delignification.
