REMOVING DCS FROM ASPEN BCTMP WITH Mg, Al-HYDROTALCITE-LIKE COMPOUNDS

High yield pulp, HYP, or bleached chemi- thermomechanical pulp, BCTMP, has found many applications in the production of various paper grades. However, compared with bleached kraft pulps, it usually contains more dissolved and colloidal substances (DCS) that can affect the papermaking process negatively. In this study, Mg, Al-hydrotalcitelike compound (HTLc) and its calcined product CHTLc) were employed to remove DCS from an aspen BCTMP. Results show that the anionic dissolved organic substances and can be removed by HTLc. The colloidal substances can also be effectively removed when the concentration of the HTLc exceeds 300 mg/l. In-situ re-construction of CHTLc to HTLc provides larger capacity to remove the dissolved and colloidal substances; however, the re-construction is a slow process under the conditions studied.
