EFFECT OF DEINKING PROCESS ON THE ELECTROKINETIC PROPERTIES OF RECYCLED PULP

The old newspapers were deinked by neutral and alkaline deinking methods and the electrokinetic properties of the resulting pulps were evalulated. The relation of charge characteristics with fibre performance was also investigated. The results indicated that alkaline deinking process could result in the increase of the carboxylic acid content, bulk charge, surface charge, zeta potential, and dissolved charge of the deinked pulp. The higher bulk charge and surface charge was beneficial to the swelling of fibre wall and the retention of filler, respectively. It was also found that wastewaters from the neutral deinking process had less CODCr than the alkaline deinked wastewaters.
