ALKALINE PEROXIDE MECHANICAL PULPING OF PRE-TREATED WHEAT STRAW

Hand and mechanically harvested wheat straw was collected from an experimental station in Mashhad, Iran. Weight ratios of internodes, leaves and nodes were 55%, 40% and 5% in the hand harvested and 62.25%, 27.65% and 6.18% and 3.92% of other parts mainly rachis in the mechanically harvested wheat straw. Fiber dimension of the three internodes, leaves and nodes were determined and the results showed comparable variation in fiber dimension of the stalk of wheat straw with those in the wood. Chemical composition including ash content, cold and hot water, 1% NaOH and acetone solubles as well as cellulose and lignin content were also determined, and the results showed superior characteristics in internodes in relation to chemical pulping. To produce high yield pulp, various pre-treatments and two chemical treatments (NaOH+H2O2) were used. The results showed that the highest APMP yield (72.4%) was related to the pulp produced with cold water pretreatment for 10 minutes and two stages chemical treatments, and the lowest one (61.25%) was obtained with 1% NaOH for 20 minutes and one stage chemical treatment. The optical and strength properties of the produced pulps were as follow: brightness 22.4%~33.8%, burst index 0.63~3.22 kPam2/g, breaking length 1.66-5.39 km, tear index 2.48~5.89 mNm2/g and folding endurance 1.75~600. In summary, the results indicated that at the higher absorbed alkali values, brightness was reduced and the strength properties were improved.
