EFFECT OF MATERIAL PRETREATMENT ON CHEMICAL PULPING PROPERTIES OF THE WHOLE COTTON STALK

Effect of material pretreatment on improving chemical pulping properties of the whole cotton stalk was studied. The cotton stalk is made up of epidermic tissue, phloem and xylem, and chemical pulping properties of different tissues changed significantly, so the physical and chemical pretreatment on the whole cotton stalk before cooking was utilized to decrease the difference in pulping properties of the tissues. The results showed that material pretreatment with impregnation and compression could improve bleaching properties and dirt removing of the final pulp compared with conventional pulping processes of the whole cotton stalk. However, strength properties, especially folding endurance times, decreased slightly. As to the adopted cooking processes, kraft pulping process had better ability in dirt count removing, and adding AQ (anthraquinone) in cooking liquor had little effect on dirt count removing, AS-AQ (Alkali Sulfite-AQ) pulp has higher Kappa number than that of NaOH-AQ pulping process, but for its light color of the unbleached pulp, the brightness of bleached pulp was close to that of NaOH-AQ pulp, with little difference in dirt count. Pretreatment on the cotton stalk can improve chemical pulping properties, and thus upgrade the economic benefit of the whole cotton stalk.
