APPLICATION OF SILICA OR BENTONITE IN CO-FLOCCULATION OF FINES AND FILLER

It is well known that the “nano/micro-particulate retention systems improves retention and drainage greatly, so nano-particle (colloidal silica) and micro-particle (bentonite) were prepared to apply with CPAM in co-flocculation of fines and filler. The comparison among no bentonite addition, addition of bentonite in handsheet former, and co-flocculation of fines and filler with CPAM and bentonite (FFPB co-flocculation process) showed that FFPB co-flocculation process had the best filler retention. Bentonite improved drainability of furnish, sheet formation and smoothness, while light scattering coefficient marginally decreased. The effect on other properties was not significant. Co-flocculation of fines and filler with CPAM and silica (FFPS co-flocculation process) increased filler retention slightly, but it increased paper apparent density and tensile index. It also decreased air permeability and light scattering coefficient and deteriorated sheet formation. The results showed that silica was more effective in fines retention compared to filler retention. More fines were retained by silica, so the drainability became deteriorated. As a result, more fibers flocculated and sheet formation deteriorated.
