POLLUTION CHARACTERISTICS OF PAPER MILL EFFLUENT AND ITS TREATMENT WITH OZONE
Due to the rapid development in the past twenty years, production and consumption amounts of paper and paperboard have increased very quickly in China, and the pulp and papermaking industry has become an important industry. However, problems of insufficient supply of raw materials for papermaking and environmental pollution have become the big drawback for its further development in the new century. In particular, paper mill effluent and its treatment have received great concern because of the high concentration and toxicity of pollutants. In this paper, ozone was used to treat the effluent that had been treated by physico-chemical method combined with biological methods. Thus, one of the objectives of this paper is to analyze the modification of pollution characteristics of the effluent produced by a pulping mill during physico-chemical treatment combined with biological treatments process. Another objective of this paper is to study the degradation and removal behavior of organic pollutants during the ozonation treatment process. Results showed that physico-chemical treatment combined with biological treatments was very effective to remove CODcr and BOD5 of the effluent. However, biological treatment had no effect on decolorization of the effluent, and CODcr and color after the combined treatments were still high. On the treatment of the biologically treated effluent, ozonation could not effectively remove CODcr of the effluent, but good removal efficiency of color, lignin and obvious improvement of biodegradability were obtained in this study. Thus, to achieve good removal efficiency of CODcr and color, ozonation combined with subsequent biological methods or application of catalytic ozonation are suggested.
