REMOVAL OF METHYLENE BLUE DYE FROM AQUEOUS SOLUTION USING MODIFIED CELLULOSE HYDROGEL

Superabsorbent cellulose-graft-acrylic acid (cellulose-g-AA) hydrogels were prepared via free radical polymerization in phosphorous acid solution. The hydrogels were used for removing cationic dyes such as methylene Blue (MB). Adsorption experiments revealed that the hydrogels exhibited excellent performance in MB adsorption, the mole ratio of AA to cellulose and the pH of adsorption medium had great effect on adsorption capacity. The adsorption capacity exceeded 2000 mg/g for hydrogels with mole ratio of 6:1 in distilled water. The adsorption behavior of the hydrogels showed that the adsorption isotherm could be well described by Langmuir equation and the kinetic data was in good agreement with pseudo-second-order equation. Desorption studies revealed that 69% MB could be desorbed in acid condition.
