RESEARCH ON THE CHARACTERIZATION OF PAPERMAKING WASTEWATER AND ACTIVATED SLUDGE BASED ON THE ACTIVATED SLUDGE MODEL
Activated sludge model 1(ASM1) has been most widely used for the description of activated sludge processes. However, most of the wastewater components and activated sludge parameters in ASM1 are not directly measurable, which restricts the application and simulation of ASM1. Therefore, the characteristic analysis of wastewater and activated sludge is the essential work prior to the simulation of the activated sludge processes in actual wastewater treatment plants. In this paper, wastewater and activated sludge, which were collected from a papermaking mill, have been treated and analyzed by respirometry, and the experimental results proved that ASM1 could be used to describe the biological treatment process of papermaking wastewater. Three characteristic parameters have been studied, including heterotrophic yield coefficient YH=0.625 g XBH COD formed·(g COD utilised)-1, heterotrophic decay rate bH=0.47 day-1 and maximum heterotrophic growth rate μH=2.66 day-1. The total COD of collected wastewater was divided into SI (soluble inert organic matter), SS (readily biodegradable substrate), XI (particulate inert organic matter), and XS (slowly biodegradable substrate), and their proportions in total COD were 4.11%, 18.11%, 57.81%, and 19.97% respectively.
